"The Highest Calibre”

"We first commissioned Neil in 2000 to build a 2m-high, largely sandstone stone wall for our garden. It included a stone archway through to the field, an arched window, and two arched alcoves. (Though not an artist, I did a crude sketch on a piece of cardboard). Completed in early 2001, it was exactly what we asked for. It was a double wall, built on the batter, with hand-hewn coping stones, and resembled a drystone wall in many ways. It was, and still is, lovely to look at, whether it's raining or sunny. 12 or more years later - somewhat tired of having to replace very unlovely and clattery wooden fences after the latest gale - we asked Neil to continue the wall along the back of the garden and back up to the house. We count ourselves very fortunate that he was available. With Neil's help, we managed to locally source 50 tonnes of stone very similar to the stone we sourced before. After a year or so, with weathering, the extension will look just the same as the earlier wall. Neil completed the second phase at the end of January 2014, and we are again delighted. Neil is an artist and craftsman of the highest calibre. Just watch and marvel as he chooses each stone individually, and individually shapes it, glovelessly, and places it carefully into position; just watch as he works away in whatever weather to create a wall which will probably outlast you and me by a few generations and will always be a joy to behold. Neil supplies you with accurate and transparent quotations and estimates. His prices, then and now, seem to us very fair, and we have no hesitation in recommending him. He is also a pleasure to have around. Expect a steady, careful, and thorough job to be done. Have a good idea of what you would like, and try to stick to it. If you do commission Neil, please keep him supplied with tea and coffee about once an hour - believe me, he deserves it; he's a treasure. So, the bottom line again: if you would like a beautiful stone wall round your property, or part of your property, contact Neil Carson and see when (if) he's available."
